A PureWick Alternative for Men
In one paragraph: The Quietdry Night System is an overnight urine-collection system for men who are in bed at night and can't get up safely. A washable silicone cup — in a standard or a shorter retracted fit — sits in a cotton brief. When urine reaches the cup, a sensor starts a small rechargeable pump at the bedside, which drains it into a 2 L jug and stops when the cup is empty. There are no disposable wicks to rebuy. US$299, free tracked US shipping, 60-night money-back trial.
Men's options for staying dry at night
| Option | How it works | Works well when | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adult briefs and pads | Absorb urine; changed when wet | Light or occasional leaks; easy to start | Night-time changes, wet skin, laundry, ongoing cost |
| Condom (sheath) catheter + night bag | Adhesive sheath on the penis, gravity drain to a bag | Enough length for the sheath to stay on | Often slips or won't stay on with retracted anatomy; adhesive on skin nightly |
| Bedside urinal bottle | Used when awake | The person can wake and position it | Doesn't help if they sleep through it |
| PureWick™ Male External Catheter | Wicking pouch around the base of the penis with an adhesive seal; bedside suction | Insurance covers it, or cash cost isn't an issue | Men's starter sets $779–$1,034.99; catheters rebought in packs of 30 |
| Quietdry Night System | Washable silicone cup in a brief; sensor-triggered bedside pump | Paying cash; retracted anatomy; you'd rather wash than restock | Not billed to insurance; for use in bed, not while walking about; new brand with no clinical studies |
PureWick prices from purewickathome.com, checked 30 September 2026. BD describes its male external catheter as designed for men who are incompatible with condom catheters.
Standard or retracted fit?
Standard (Men): a tubular cup that encloses the penis. Choose this if a condom catheter would normally fit; as a guide, the maker recommends it when the penis is longer than about 4 cm (1.5 in).
Retracted fit: a shorter cup for when the penis sits close to the body — common with age, weight change, or cold. If sheaths keep slipping off, or the penis is shorter than about 4 cm (1.5 in), this is the one to try. More on overnight options for a retracted penis.
Not sure? Email info@quietdry.com. If the first cup doesn't suit, the 60-night trial includes one free fit swap — we send the new cup first.
What a night looks like
- Bedtime: fit the brief with the cup in place, check the rim sits flat, connect the tube, switch the unit on at the bedside.
- Overnight: when urine reaches the cup the pump runs until the cup is clear, then returns to standby. It works on the back or the side.
- Morning: empty the 2 L jug, rinse the cup and tubing with warm water, put the brief in the wash and fit the spare. How it works, step by step.
What it costs over a year
PureWick's men's corded starter set is $779.00 with 30 catheters; after that, catheters are rebought in packs of 30, and men's packs cost more than women's. Quietdry is US$299 once, with no catheters or wicks to rebuy; its one wear part is a small sensor tip. See the full PureWick vs Surity vs Quietdry comparison.
When not to choose Quietdry
- He has an indwelling catheter in place.
- He is up and walking at night — Quietdry is for use lying in bed.
- Medicare or insurance will cover a PureWick for him — check that first. How coverage works.
- There is broken or very fragile skin in the area — ask the care team before using any external collector.
Questions
Will it stay on if he rolls onto his side?
The cup has a soft raised rim and the brief has an adjustable waist tab and side straps to hold it in place. Check the fit after he turns for the first few nights.
Is there adhesive on the skin?
No. The cup is held by the brief, not glued.
Is it a treatment for incontinence?
No. It collects urine and keeps the bed dry; it doesn't treat the cause. The US FDA classifies this product type as a non-invasive powered urine collector (code NZU, Class I, 510(k)-exempt).
